CSA Newsletter July 12
csa Harvest News

The LEHNE FARM CSA has officially begun!  We are excited to share this season's bounty of produce with you all.  This week included in your boxes you will find:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Snow Peas
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Swiss Chard
  • Zucchini
  • Cilantro

SeedlingsAs with every farm the weather is always a factor.  This cold wet spring took a toll on some of our early crops, but as the weeks progress the hot days are helping make up for lost time.  For example some of the broccoli in your boxes could have come from the picture below.  These broccoli seedlings were transplanted into small pots which were eventually planted in the garden.  To our surprise one week later these young plants were covered with 2 inches of snow!
Happy Day!

Grandpa Norm Next week we are expecting to choose from the following to fill your box: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, beets, zucchini, kale, Swiss chard and some herbs.  At both pick-up sites there will be a "give and take" box for members to trade items.  Please feel free at anytime to offer your suggestions to make this season's CSA the best it can be!  We look forward to seeing you all next week.  REMEMBER TO ALSO BRING WITH YOU YOUR CLEAN EMPTY HARVEST BOX...Thanks!

Braised Kale

1 Bunch Kale, Chopped

1-2 T butter

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 T of Balsamic Vinegar

In a large skillet sauté Kale in butter until soft, approximately 2-3 minutes.  Season with salt and pepper and add Balsamic Vinegar, cook down another 2 minutes.  Enjoy!

Kale is a form of cabbage, green in color, in which the central leaves do not form a head.  It is considered to be closer to wild cabbage than most domesticated forms.  Kale is considered to be a highly nutritious vegetable with powerful antioxidant properties and is anti-inflammatory.  Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, zeaxanthin, and reasonably rich in calcium.

Broccoli Salad

1 Head Broccoli

1 Medium red onion

1 Cup raisins

1/2 Cup sunflower seeds

1/2 Cup pumpkin seeds

6-8 slices bacon, cooked & crumbled

Dressing:
1 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons cider vinegar, 3 tablespoons honey.  Whisk together.

Cut broccoli into small pieces and place in a bowl.  Chop the onion & add to broccoli.

Add remaining ingredients and stir.  Add dressing and allow to marinate in refrigerator for an hour.

Could substitute cauliflower for Broccoli.  Also you can substitute seasoned rice vinegar for cider vinegar.
